Not everyone was born with perfectly straight teeth, and for those with a few teeth out of place, Invisalign® is there to help. The old method of straightening teeth using chunky, uncomfortable metal brackets and wires is a thing of the past. The modern dental patient prefers a more discreet treatment and a much more comfortable experience. This is where Invisalign® comes in.
What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is a new system of straightening teeth that has replaced the bulky, metallic braces of the past. The system is comprised of a number of custom plastic trays that are meant to be worn over the teeth in succession. Each tray is designed to fit snugly over the teeth and should be worn in a period of either one to two weeks based on the exact treatment plan written out by an Invisalign® dentist. The best part of the Invisalign® method is that the clear aligner trays are completely transparent and virtually invisible when worn.
How does Invisalign® work?
After a consultation appointment in which the dentist will help create a customized treatment plan, the clear aligners are fabricated in the dental laboratory. A series of high-quality plastic aligners are created from a digital impression of the teeth. The aligners follow the treatment plan precisely, positioning each tooth carefully and comfortably. Each tray gradually moves the teeth into a straightened position by carefully applying the right amount of pressure to the right teeth at the right time.
What are the advantages of Invisalign®?
Besides being virtually invisible in person and in photos, this treatment is also more comfortable than traditional braces. Conventional braces work through a system of brackets and wires and ligatures, which pull on the teeth quite harshly. This produces a straighter smile, but at the cost of having sensitive teeth, a limited diet and even a higher risk of tooth decay at the end of treatment.
Since Invisalign® clear aligners are removable, patients can treat their teeth just as they would prior to treatment. There are no brackets, which mean that there are no white spots (early signs of tooth decay).
Important things to know about Invisalign®
Their removable nature is an advantage for most. However, remembering to take out the aligners before eating or drinking and before brushing teeth can be a difficult task. To keep Invisalign® invisible and sparkling, the dentist may send the patient home with a denture cleaning solution. Invisalign® aligners can stain if not properly cared for. Do not use toothpaste on clear aligners, as this can scratch the surface and diminish their transparency.
