Get Your Dental Crowns in One Day

The phrase “one-day dental crowns” might sound like a pipe dream, but nothing could be further from the truth. New technology has made its way into the offices of many dentists, allowing for the creation of a custom-made dental crown on the same day a patient walks through the door. How is this possible? Read on for a summary of the process.

About same-day dental crowns

Traditionally, a crown may take weeks to place. They require physical molds to be made, a temporary crown to be fitted, and a lot of time to pass. This has changed with the help of computer imagery and manufacturing.

The advanced 3D imaging process

The process for same-day crowns starts very similarly to that of a traditional crown, with the dentist numbing and removing portions of the patient's damaged tooth.

However, the first difference occurs when the time comes for taking an impression of the tooth in question. Rather than biting down on a physical mold, the dentist uses very small 3D cameras to capture a detailed set of photos of the damaged tooth. These photos are then processed using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create a perfectly-fitting digital replica of what the tooth used to look like.

Computer-assisted manufacturing

After the digital model of the tooth is created, computer-assisted manufacturing software and machinery use the model as a reference to mill a small block of ceramic into the exact shape of the tooth prior to it being damaged.

The final product is exactly what a crown is supposed to be: A perfectly fitting cap for the damaged tooth designed both to protect the tooth it covers and to restore a smile back to its former beauty. The computer-modeled crown looks just like a regular tooth. Once this process is complete, which can take under an hour, the dentist glues the crown into place and the procedure is finished.

What are the advantages of a same-day crown?

The futuristic appeal of a technology-guided, perfectly-fitting crown being made in one visit is not the only great thing about same-day crowns. In fact, the same-day process has a lot to offer.

Just one visit

For many people, taking time off from work, school or other considerations to go see the dentist can be time-consuming or even indirectly expensive due to lost wages or missed classes. The same-day crown process only requires one visit, not the several needed by a traditional crown fitting. This way, a crown can be fitted in significantly less time and allow patients to get back to their lives.

The procedure can be less invasive

The same-day crown procedure offers a less invasive course of treatment than traditional crowns. Same-day crowns also do not require the use of uncomfortable temporary crowns, or the unpleasant, gooey fluids used between procedures.
