Cosmetic Dentist Gives You a Reason to Smile
Staring at the smile in the mirror
Every day, Jack groggily wakes up at 6 a.m., sees his fading smile in the mirror and cringes. Jack tries to hide his teeth from others, avoids smiling in pictures and even goes so far as to limit speaking with others. Jack’s lack of confidence from his smile does not have to be as bad as he lets it be. All Jack needs to do for a better smile is visit a cosmetic dentist.
A better smile with all the functionality
Cosmetic dentistry involves more than just appearance. A cosmetic dentist will not only restore the appearance of a person’s smile but will also restore the functionality of the patient’s teeth. People may not realize how important confidence in one’s smile can be to how one functions through each day.
The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, AACD, conducted a survey in 2013 and found that 89 percent of patients cited improving the physical attractiveness and self-esteem as the main motivation behind seeking cosmetic dentistry. In the same survey, 54 percent of patients also sighted restorative and health reasons as a motivating factor for cosmetic dentistry.
A smile is the first thing most people see before striking up a conversation. It can be difficult to go through each day with low self-esteem due to fading, crooked, damaged or missing teeth. People who seek a cosmetic dentist are actually onto something more than simply good looks.
More than just a good look
A study conducted by Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman, Ph.D., published in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science find that smiling can help lower stress in individuals. The study had 170 participants go through stressful activities and make a specific type of smile. Some patients were told to keep a neutral expression, while others had chopsticks in the mouth to make them smile.
The National Center for Biotechnology Information, NCBI, explains in the abstract of the study that the “Findings revealed that all smiling participants, regardless of whether they were aware of smiling, had lower heart rates during stress recovery than the neutral group did.” The smiling helped patients deal with stressful situations and calm down.
With this in mind, the results show how smiling can be more important to one’s health than people originally thought. A person, like the fictional character at the beginning of this blog, can regain confidence by building a better smile. There are benefits, physically and psychologically, to smiling that one should not have to miss out on due to poor dental conditions or a lack of confidence.
