Protect Your Teeth with Preventative Care

Protect Your Teeth with Preventative Care

No matter how much the teeth object, things like plaque, popcorn kernels, spinach and more, like to move in between the teeth. Unfortunately, brushing and flossing may not be enough to help the teeth out. A preventative dentist can help block out the unwanted pieces of plaque and help keep a smile healthy.

Prevent the worst with the best

Preventing the worst types of dental disease is not as hard as people believe. With at least two visits to the dentist per year and consistent dental hygiene at home, a patient can ensure healthy teeth. A preventative dentist can clean all the places in the mouth that are difficult to reach, while also catching the early signs of a dental disease before they can spread.

However, it seems that he the older people get, the less likely they are to visit the dentist for regular cleanings. The centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, found that 62 percent of adults between the ages of 18 to 64 had visited the dentist in 2014. Whereas, the CDC also found that 83 percent of children, 2 to 17 years of age, visited the dentist in the same year.

Adults and children are equally susceptible to infection in the teeth. By postponing or avoiding dental cleanings, adults only increase the chance of needing more extensive dental work done in the future. At a dental cleaning, a professional dentist will clean the teeth and check on the condition of any implants the patient may have. A dentist can clean all of the hard-to-reach places, ensuring a clean and healthy set of teeth.

A patient’s teeth will only remain clean if the patient continues to brush and floss properly.

Proper cleaning techniques

Treat you gorgeous pearly whites the same way you would treat your hair- with proper brushing techniques. As simple as it sounds, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, ADHA, explains that “Proper brushing is essential for cleaning teeth and gums effectively.” People may sigh or become annoyed at the aspect of being lectured about brushing, but need to realize what proper brushing can mean for one’s dental hygiene.

By placing the bristles along the gum line at a 45-degree angle and making sure that the bristles “contact both the tooth surface and the gumline,” a patient cleans the teeth and the gums. It is important to “Gently brush using back, forth, and rolling motion along all of the inner tooth surfaces,” the ADHA adds.

By brushing with the proper technique at least twice a day and flossing once a day, patients can keep their teeth healthy. Even if there is no food visibly stuck in the teeth, there can still be food particles that will lead to plaque forming on the surface of the teeth. If you have not been to the dentist in over six months, do not be afraid to schedule an appointment today. The dentist will not judge you, but help treat your teeth.
