What Problems Can Invisalign® Fix?

Invisalign clear aligners are clear plastic aligners which are used to fix tooth-alignment problems. The aligners have become popular in recent years because they allow people to receive orthodontic treatments discreetly, which for a lot of people is preferable to traditional braces.

What types of problems can Invisalign fix?

Some of the dental problems dentists use Invisalign to fix include:

Teeth straightening

This is the problem Invisalign is most commonly used to treat. The process involves the dentist making a 3D impression of the patient’s teeth, which is used to show the patient how their teeth will gradually move into the desired position. The 3D impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the aligners are made.

When Invisalign is used to straighten teeth, the patient will be required to keep the aligner in their mouth for 22 hours a day, removing them only when they want to eat, brush their teeth and clean the aligners. The dentist will give the patient a tray of aligners to use until their treatment is complete. Each aligner should be used for two weeks before being discarded for the next set of aligners in the tray. Once the complete set of aligners have been used up, the teeth will have moved into the desired position, signaling the end of the treatment.

Crowding

Crowding occurs when there is not enough room in the mouth for the teeth in the jaw, which forces the teeth in the mouth to be cramped too close together. If left untreated, crowding can cause serious dental problems because the position of the teeth will make it difficult to clean parts of the teeth and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

A dentist can fix crowding problems with Invisalign by first using the aligners to straighten the teeth. After the teeth have been straightened, the aligners will be used to spread the teeth apart. In some cases, the dentist will also have to perform interproximal reduction to create more space in the mouth.

Gaps in the teeth

Gaps are spaces in the teeth that affect the appearance of the teeth and can also affect the patient’s speech. The space between the teeth can also cause crooked tooth growth and gum problems, which can damage the teeth.

Gaps in the teeth can be fixed by using Invisalign to straighten the teeth then shift the teeth closer together to eliminate spaces. In severe cases, the dentist will have to perform additional dental work to ensure that the teeth do not get damaged while the spaces close.

Bite problems

Bite problems occur when the upper and lower teeth are not properly aligned, which can lead to difficulty chewing and pain. Invisalign has been successfully used to fix moderate bite problems, but severe bite problems may require surgery to fix.

Conclusion

Invisalign aligners can be used to straighten the teeth and fix other problems that people have with their teeth. If you have flaws in your teeth that you want to fix, schedule an appointment with a dentist to find out if the problem can be fixed with Invisalign.
